Spreadsheet Day 2026 Roundup
Thank you for celebrating Spreadsheet Day 2026 on October 17th! Here’s a roundup with a few highlights from this year’s posts, in case you missed some of them.
Spreadsheet Problems
Ken Puls posted this comic by @xkcd, and I think most of us can relate to it. A spreadsheet is the perfect place to store your problems! You can sort them, and filter them, and colour code them with conditional formatting!
Happy #SpreadsheetDay day to our fellow #Excel and spreadsheet lovers!💚 This comic from the always funny @xkcd seemed fitting. (https://t.co/Rf9uhnwzK8)
Spreadsheet Day was started by @ddalgleish to commemorate the day the 1st spreadsheet program, VisiCalc, was released in 1979. https://t.co/bjfaiCow4c— Ken Puls, FCPA, FCMA (@kpuls) October 17, 2026
Celebrations
Apparently there are other celebrations on October 17th, but Colorado Grandma knows that Spreadsheet Day is the best one, obviously!
@inqdragon2 Spreadsheet day. Probably not a lot of folks out here celebrating, but it is my go to life organizational tool. So cheers!

Business Tool
A spreadsheet it an essential business tool, and I agree with Odero Bookkeeping! It would be hard to succeed without our business spreadsheets.
Happy Spreadsheet Day!
Today is Spreadsheet Day, so of course we have to celebrate one of our favorite business tools!
And if you own a business, chances are you have at least ONE spreadsheet you couldn’t live without!?
Do you love spreadsheets or do spreadsheets stress you out?

Government Business
Ohio Office of Budget and Management was celebrating too, and they must use lots of spreadsheets!

Honouring VisiCalc
And finally, here’s a great post by ARUN, explaining how Spreadsheet Day honours VisiCalc – the first spreadsheet program for personal computers.
📊 Spreadsheet Day — October 17
Today celebrates one of the quiet inventions that completely changed how people work with numbers.
The date honours VisiCalc, the first spreadsheet program for personal computers, created by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston. The Apple II version shipped on October 17, 1979.
Before programs like this, changing one figure in a financial model could mean manually recalculating everything that depended on it. VisiCalc changed that — edit one cell, and related calculations could update automatically.
That simple grid of rows, columns and formulas helped turn personal computers into serious business tools.
Spreadsheet Day itself was founded by Debra Dalgleish and first celebrated in 2010, with October 17 chosen specifically to honour VisiCalc’s release.
From VisiCalc → Lotus 1-2-3 → Excel → Google Sheets, spreadsheets have evolved enormously, but the basic idea remains remarkably familiar.
