Spreadsheet Creativity: Needlework Stitch Diagrams

JoAnn Paules uses Excel every day at work, to make financial charts and reports for her department.

When she finally gets home in the evening, Excel helps her relax, by providing the canvas for her needlework stitch diagrams, as you can see below.

JoAnn explains, “I did a very basic sheet for a simple eyelet stitch. Eyelets tend to have more than 4 stitches but I wanted to keep it simple. In the text that would accompany the graphic, I would tell the stitcher to:

  • come up at 1 and down in the center,
  • up at 2, pull the thread to distort the center hole, down in the center,
  • up at 3, pull the thread, down in the center,
  • up at 4, pull the thread, and down in the center.

JoAnne is also a Microsoft Publisher expert, and has received the Microsoft MVP award for that program for several years. You can read her latest article, and see another example of her creative skills, on the Que website: DIY Desktop Calendar with Microsoft Publisher 2010.
