Spreadsheet Day and Day of Data with NASA

Spreadsheet Day is going to space! This year, Microsoft is partnering with NASA to bring you the Day of Data, and to celebrate Spreadsheet Day. They’ll explore how data powers astronauts, space missions, and our world.

In this video, Johnnie Thomas, from Microsoft, and Bill Jelen (Mr. Excel), talk about the upcoming Day of Data events.

October 14th Talk to an Astronaut

The first live event is today, October 14th, at 10 AM Pacific Time. Students will have the chance to hear from an astronaut, a propulsion engineer, and an astrophysicist!

  • NASA Astronaut Stephen G. Bowen
  • Erik Lopez, a propulsion engineer from NASA
  • Christine Reilly, an astrophysicist from Blue Origin

They’ll discuss how they use data and the impact that data has had on their job.

The event details are on this Skype in the Classroom page.

Data of Data Student Resources

Parents and teachers can find Day of Data resources on the Microsoft website. There are 2 online Excel activities, and other resources.

The first online Excel activity is an intro to using and understanding data:

  • Introduction to data and types of data
  • How data can be organized and sorted with tables
  • How data can be shown in a chart to gain valuable insights

The second Excel activity focuses on data visualization.

  • Common chart types and their purpose
  • Use simple charts to gain insights for two data categories
  • Use more complex charts to interpret data for three data categories

Spreadsheet Day Excel Visualization Challenge

On Spreadsheet Day (October 17th), you can participate in Microsoft’s Excel visualization challenge.

Winners will be chosen by a combination of a judging panel and popular vote, so be sure to vote, even if you don’t submit a visualization!
